How to Make Strawberry Jam

When I first tried a recipe for homemade Strawberry Jam, it was almost too simple to believe. No fancy ingredients, just strawberries, sugar and a tiny squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

FIRST: Combine sugar and frozen strawberries in a medium-sized pot.  Allow the strawberries to thaw before proceeding to the THIRD step.

SECOND: If using fresh strawberries, clean and chop them in tiny bits.  Then, add the chopped fresh strawberries and sugar in a medium-sized pot. Use a potato masher to mash the mixture roughly before proceeding to the THIRD step.

THIRD: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Simmer till the jam sets and stir regularly; about 15 to 20 minutes.  Skim off any foam at the top of the pot at the beginning of the boiling process.  Once set, add a squeeze of half lemon juice and stir well.

FOURTH: Allow the mixture to cool down completely before transferring into sterilized Mason jar.

Making Strawberry Jam With Pectin Sugar

To make Jam with pectin sugar, subtitute regular sugar with pectin sugar in a 1:1 ratio.

FIRST: Combine Pectin sugar and frozen strawberries in a medium-sized pot.  Allow the strawberries to thaw before proceeding to the THIRD step.

SECOND: If using fresh strawberries, clean and chop them in tiny bits.  Then, add the chopped fresh strawberries and Pectin sugar in a medium-sized pot. Use a potato masher to mash the mixture roughly before proceeding to the THIRD step.

THIRD: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Simmer for 2 minutes and skim off the white foam at the surface of the pot.  Turn off the heat and add a squeeze of half lemon juice and stir well.

FOURTH: Allow the mixture to cool down completely before transferring into sterilized Mason jar.

How to Know When Strawberry Jam Is Ready

Put a plate in the freezer at the beginning of your cooking time. Once you think your strawberry jam has thickened OR reached the setting point, spoon a bit of the jam on the cold plate and tilt it vertically so the jam runs.

If it runs slow and descent, it is done.  If it is still quite liquid and makes a mess, then put the pot back on the heat and boil the jam for another 3 minutes before testing again.

Is Strawberry Jam Healthy For You?

Well, Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C and manganese and also contain decent amounts of folate and potassium. Also, strawberries are very rich in antioxidants and plant compounds, which may have benefits for heart health and blood sugar control.

HOWEVER, Strawberry Jam is loaded with sugar which is not part of a healthy diet.  Therefore, it is advisable to consume it in moderation.

Frozen Strawberries vs. Fresh Strawberries

You can use either fresh or frozen strawberries in this recipe with a little alteration in the amount of sugar added.  Frozen strawberries are not as sweet as fresh strawberries and may need a little more sugar to achieve the same sweetness.

How To Refrigerate And Freeze Jam

Strawberry Jam can be easily stored in the fridge. To store, transfer cooled jam in an air-tight Mason jar and store in the fridge for up to 2 months.

As much as the sugar in jam acts as a preservative, it might be a good idea to freeze what you won’t consume in the near future to maintain the fresh flavor.

To freeze; transfer the cooled jam ¾ full in a Mason jar.  Close it tightly and keep in the freezer for up to a year.

To Thaw; leave overnight in the fridge or for a couple of hours on the kitchen countertop.  Alternatively, you can dip the tightly sealed Mason jar in a bucket of lukewarm water to fasten the thawing process.
